What Icarus left behind

This dance performance is about mental health. I hope to convey through dance an aspect of the struggle with mental health that words can’t quite grasp. Whether you or a loved one is struggling with their own mental health, this evening brings hope. Afterward, we’ll use the performance as a starting point for a dialogue.

What Icarus Left Behind

Icarus is a figure from Greek mythology. With wings made of wax, he tries to fly to freedom, but he flies too close to the sun, his wings melt, and he crashes into the sea.

In life, we develop coping mechanisms that help us deal with the world and life itself. However, these mechanisms are not always healthy and only make things worse. When life throws a curveball, you can lose control and thus destroy yourself.

At the deepest point of your own destruction, however, you can be open to the greatest transformation. By surrendering and accepting that you are drowning, you can let go of old and new traumas. The old coping mechanisms are slowly replaced by healthier methods, and slowly you climb back up. In this process, you come closer to yourself and discover your own strength. This is how you find the freedom you’ve always sought.

Nadeche Studer

Nadeche is a dancer, choreographer, and theater maker. She is trained in classical and modern dance, as well as improvisation. In recent years, she has been primarily involved in ecstatic dance.

For the last couple of years, Nadeche has struggled with her own mental health. She now wants to share her story through this performance.

The performance will be in English. The after talk will depend on the audience’s needs.
